Skin Overtone

Skin overtone is the outer layer of the skin called the epidermis. Overtone is affected by how much melanin your skin has. The shades of your skin tone can change over time for different factors like the weather, age, and lifestyle.

There are four main skin overtones:

  • Light
  • Fair
  • Medium
  • Dark

Skin Undertone

Skin undertone is the subtle hue that can be seen underneath the surface skin. Undertones can vary from very cool to very warm. Some may have neutral undertones. Everybody’s undertones can be on the spectrum of cool to warm.

There are four main skin undertones:

  • Cool
  • Warm
  • Neutral
  • Olive

Olive undertones are similar to neutral undertones however, there are cooler and warmer olive undertones depending on if you have more pink or yellow on your skin.

How to Determine My Undertone?

There are a few ways you can do to determine your undertone. Here are ways to identify your undertone:

The Vein Test

Check the color of your veins. If you have blue/purple veins, you may have a cool undertone. While if you have green veins then you may have warm undertones.

If you can see blue/purple and green veins then you may have neutral undertones. You have olive undertones if your skin is greyish and green.

The White Paper Test

Put a white paper near your neck or chest area and check what colors pop off more on your skin. If you see more pink then you may have cool undertones and if you see more yellow then you may have warm undertones.

However, if you can see both pink and yellow then you may have neutral undertones while if your skin appears ashy and greyish then you may have olive undertones.

The Jewelry Test

Try to put on gold and silver jewelry and see which one looks better on you. If gold makes your skin brighter and more vibrant then you may have warm undertones while if silver looks better then you may have cool undertones.

But, if you think both look as good then you may have neutral undertones. However, if you think you look just okay with both then you may have olive undertones. To confirm, you can try bronze jewelry.
